Grab extra points, the judges’ way…
‘What kind of things do you look for when scoring?’ we asked Liz Mason, judge at Beaver Hall’s ‘Have a go dressage’ unaffiliated event (plus a whole host of affiliated competitions).
For affiliated and unaffiliated competitions alike, I watch how cooperative and obedient the horse is. I particularly notice balance, accuracy and cutting corners because they’re good measures of skill.
What kind of feedback do you offer to riders?
I’m positive and always try to be helpful. I let riders know about things they could change in order to boost their chances of earning more points. I suppose I’m honest without being overly-critical – it’s about encouraging people to continue riding, whilst improving their technique.
You also run a dressage clinic at Beaver Hall, who’s it for and what will they learn?
Riders focus on things like accuracy, riding straight lines, proper circles and full corners – all of these small factors add up to big points at the end.
My classes fit with the Beaver Hall approach, which is to welcome all levels of rider, offering firm but hopefully useful advice.
Liz brings over 20 years’ judging experience to the table and will next be available at her dressage clinic. Train with her on 14th July at Beaver Hall.
